Diagnosis of Liver Cancer. AFP concentrations are increased in patients with liver cancer, hepatitis, and liver cirrhosis. Increased levels in severe hepatitis indicate liver cell regeneration. Thus, the absence of AFP in patients with fulminant hepatitis is considered a poor prognostic sign.
